Strong Enough (Play Like A Girl)
About
Junior year is going to be my year.
It’s mid-October, the heart of cross-country season, and I’m running fast. Faster than my teammate and archrival, Mia. Fast enough to get noticed by college recruiters.
Until an incident occurs while I’m running alone and some creep chases after and harasses me, striking fear in my heart and shredding my feelings of invincibility. I manage to escape unharmed. Physically, anyway. Emotionally, I’m a mess. Running will never be the same again.
Further, after some digging and scrolling through news stories, I find what happened to me is not an anomaly for female runners. Worse, some have been assaulted, and even killed while doing what they love. What Ilove. I guess I’ve been lucky so far. Then again, I’m only seventeen.
Now, I’m not only questioning my passion for running, but my best friend, Adam, whom I need more than ever for support, is acting ‘different’. Like he suddenly has ‘feelings’ for me. But he’s my best friend. And I don’t know if what he’s feeling is real or pity.
I’ve already had my spirit broken by a stranger; I can’t afford to have my heart broken by my best friend. Because I’ve wanted more with him since I’ve known him.
